Tips for Seniors to Have the Healthiest Summer Yet

With the promise of another hot, humid Florida summer on the horizon, it’s important for older adults to keep themselves and their loved ones safe as temperatures rise.

Let’s look at some health and safety tips that can make your summer more enjoyable, whether you’re a resident at Village on the Green, exploring your living options or simply visiting the state for the season.

Summer Health and Safety Tips

Staying healthy and safe during the summer’s hottest days is all about paying close attention to your needs and mitigating risk. The heat and humidity cause an increased risk of common summer ailments such as heat stroke, dehydration, heat exhaustion and sunburn. Aging adults are at higher risk for each of these ailments, and as such should be prepared to manage those risks.

Wear Sunscreen and Sunglasses

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, and having more than five sunburns in your life doubles your chances of melanoma. The sun’s harsh UVA and UVB rays are a major contributor to the development of skin cancer which is why applying sunscreen regularly is so important. It’s recommended that you apply SPF 30 or higher at least 15 minutes before spending time outdoors, even on cloudy or overcast days. You should plan to reapply after water activities or every 90 minutes.

Polarized sunglasses provide protection for your eyes against the damaging impacts of sunlight. Because seniors face declining eyesight more frequently, wearing prescription or polarized sunglasses is an important part of summer safety.

Lighten Up Your Wardrobe

What you choose to wear during the summer months can have an impact on your enjoyment and risk levels. Opt for lighter fabric choices like cotton or materials with sweat-wicking properties, as they will keep you cooler and more comfortable. Heavier fabrics and darker colors absorb more light and reflect more heat, leading to increased risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Practice Excellent Hydration Habits

Staying hydrated is always an important part of any wellness routine, but it is especially critical in the summer. Aim for a minimum of 64 ounces of water a day, and keep a reusable water bottle on you at all times to make hydrating easier. It’s important to drink water even when you aren’t feeling thirsty to counteract the effects of warmer temperatures and increased humidity. Proper hydration can stave off heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Beat the Heat Indoors

Spending time outdoors during the summer months is exciting. There are so many activities to partake in,  and being outside to soak up the natural vitamin D just feels good. However, spending too much time outside during the hottest times of day can have a negative impact on your health. When it gets too hot, don’t be afraid to head inside and enjoy the sunny weather from the comfort of your air conditioned home.

Adjust Your Wellness Routines

Fitness is an essential part of every senior’s wellness routine year-round, but finding the right exercises and habits to support your wellness during the summer looks a little different than it does during the cooler months.

During warmer weather, try taking your workouts to the pool, or simply lower the intensity of your exercise routine. Many people shift their workout time in the summer from afternoons to early mornings when the temperatures are cooler.

Nutrition is another important part of wellness that is made all the easier during the summer months. Make a point to check out your local farmer’s market and enjoy local produce all season long. Local produce provides an excellent food-based source of hydration, vitamins and the nutrients you need to stay healthy and happy throughout the season.
