Spring is in the air, and with it comes a renewed interest in getting out and about. While Central Florida enjoys warm-to-mild weather year-round, spring is an especially pleasant time of year here for seniors. Staying active and engaged is one of the key components to healthy aging, so here are some suggestions on activities you can experience in and around Longwood, Florida to make the most of the season.
1. Longwood Farmers Market
Stroll the Longwood Farmers Market every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to browse local produce, artisan goods and unique crafts. Spring is an especially good time to visit the market, which introduces an even greater range of delectable local offerings as the weather warms up. Also watch for seasonal events and live music offerings.
2. Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens
The Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens popular destination is home to over 350 animals from around the world, including rare and endangered species, including Orinoco crocodiles, Clouded Leopards and Indian Rhinos. Visitors can participate in interactive experiences like feeding giraffes and petting the zoo’s resident barnyard flock of llamas, goats and sheep. The zoo’s botanical gardens are also impressive, with over 100 species of plants and trees. Experience the magic of the butterfly garden, stroll the park’s expansive system of walking trails or attend workshops and seminars on gardening and conservation.
3. EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival
Just forty minutes from Longwood, Disney’s® EPCOT Center hosts amazing seasonal events for people of all ages. The EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival runs March 1 to July 5 each year, and features a stunning display of topiaries, flower gardens and vibrant blooms. There are also educational exhibits and workshops that provide valuable information on gardening and conservation. Take a break from the festivities and enjoy live entertainment while sipping a bespoke cocktail or amuse-bouche crafted just for this occasion. Perfect for both gardening enthusiasts and those just looking for a fun way to spend a spring day.
4. Blue Springs State Park
Florida is well-known for its diverse inhabitants and habitats. Blue Springs State Park is one of the area’s many hidden wildlife havens, which was targeted for restoration in the 1970s to conserve vital manatee habitats. Since that time, the park’s manatee population has soared from 14 animals to 724 in 2022. In addition to the beloved “sea cows,” visitors will be able to spot osprey, eagles, herons and kingfishers that have made this protected area home. The best way to experience the park is by hiking along the spring run (where the manatees congregate) or taking the 4.5 mile Pine Island Trail. There are also guided river boat cruises and kayak rentals for those who enjoy the water.
5. Apopka Wildlife Drive
Located at the Lake Apopka North Shore, the Apopka Wildlife Drive audio tour is free to experience. This one-way, 11-mile, self-guided tour can be enjoyed in your own vehicle at your own pace. Visitors can stop at 11 points of interest during the tour and stream the audio tour via a mobile device app. Pick up a map online or at the visitor center. Due to ongoing restoration work in the area, the drive is closed Monday-Thursdays. Gates are open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Federal holidays. Vehicles must leave the park by 5 p.m. daily.
6. Florida Film Festival
The Florida Film Festival is held every April, and features independent and international cinema premiers. Over a span of ten days, the festival features 160+ films, numerous events and tasty food and beverage options. This is one of the few Oscar®-qualifying festivals in the U.S. that feature all three short film categories (Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film and Documentary Short Subject). Tickets can be purchased online or in-person at the Enzian Theater Box Office in Maitland, Florida.
7. Winter Park Boat Tour
For a unique way to explore the area, take the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour. Located on Lake Osceola, these hour-long rides are helmed by experienced guides. Explore three of the seven lakes in this area and cruise through two man-made canals that offer unique views of the area’s flora and fauna. See if you can spot a few of the park’s residents, including cranes, alligators and glittering schools of fish.
